This weekend several of us will be in Cheltenham on Saturday afternoon at the Kemble Brewery Inn, 27 Fairview St, Cheltenham, GL52 2JF and later at the nearby Curry Corner 133 Fairview Rd, Cheltenham, GL52 2EX.  I hope to be there at about 4,00pm.

The following day I will be cheering (very quietly) for Peter Biddlecombe, John “Elgar” Henderson and Peter “Cephas” Chamberlain at the Times Crossword Championship. which are being held this year at Cheltenham College Junior School, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL53 7AB.  If you’re a gambler, however, put your money on Mark “Mr Magoo” Goodliffe.

Meet Brian Greer

Meet Brian Greer

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

Five weeks ago Brian Greer, who has been setting the Sunday Telegraph Prize puzzle for the past 18 months,  left the following comment on the blog:

“I expect to be in London on Sunday, October 3, and would love to meet with BD, Peter, and anyone else interested, in a suitable pub.”

Well, tomorrow is the day and we are meeting in the Bree Louise, 69 Coburg Street, Euston, London, NW1 2HH at 2.00pm.  I’m not sure how long Brian will be able to stay, but Peter and I will do our best to hold on to him for as long as possible. Drop in and have a drink with us if you can.

Full details can be found here, just click on the picture:

First of all, I am not an “expert”, I don’t think even the most experienced solver – and I speak from the point of view of 40 years of DT Cryptic solving – could ever be an expert as there is always something new to learn every day.  I was introduced to the mysteries of cryptic puzzles by a fellow commuter and was hooked.   They do, however,  take a lot of practice to get into the minds of the various compilers, all of whom have different styles and methods of stretching our brains.
