Times Crossword Championship – 2010

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

This weekend several of us will be in Cheltenham on Saturday afternoon at the Kemble Brewery Inn, 27 Fairview St, Cheltenham, GL52 2JF and later at the nearby Curry Corner 133 Fairview Rd, Cheltenham, GL52 2EX.  I hope to be there at about 4,00pm.

The following day I will be cheering (very quietly) for Peter Biddlecombe, John “Elgar” Henderson and Peter “Cephas” Chamberlain at the Times Crossword Championship. which are being held this year at Cheltenham College Junior School, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL53 7AB.  If you’re a gambler, however, put your money on Mark “Mr Magoo” Goodliffe.

    1. Thanks – last year at the pub someone said something like (to win) “Goodliffe: even money, Biddlecombe 10-1” (also 10-1 for a number of other regular suspects). This seemed roughly right at the time – Mark then had two bad finals to go with his two wins. (Bad meaning one wrong answer). With Mark trying this year to be the second person to win three on the trot, his odds might be about 2-1 on.

  1. Wow! Out of my league!
Please put in a (quiet) cheer from me for Peter Biddlecombe, his blogs on the Sunday DT have been very helpful.

  2. Good Luck to all, especially he who on Saturday created a much nicer anagram of my name than any dreamt up by that Gnome!

  3. Hi Dave – by pure chance (I hadn’t realised the dates concurred!) I’m at the Cheltenham Literary festival at a talk by Salman Rushdie on Saturday – is it an open event again and if so do you need definite numbers for the curry (in which case count me in for sure lol!)

    1. Drcross

Both days are open events (watching on Sunday, it’s too late to enter)! I’m sure the numbers at the restaurant will be OK.

  4. Hi Dave – See y’all tomorrow. We’ll be in the Mad Bear and Bishop from c. 9am and the Kemble around 2pm.

  5. Will the puzzle used in tomorrow’s Times Crossword Championship be published for the general public?

    Good Luck to all!

    1. Franco,

The puzzles used in the championship are usually available on the Times website the day after the championships, and the Grand final puzzles might be in the printed paper that day too. They’ll also be blogged at “Times for the Times” after a gap of a few days to let people who couldn’t get to Cheltenham have a go at them.

      1. Is it the the Grand final tomorrow – or just a qualifier?

I am impressed by all of you who get to this stage of the competition, but particularly impressed by “Bill Pilkington who apparently won in 1987, 1988 and 1994, famously downing a pint of beer between each puzzle.”
