A typically enjoyable & reasonably straightforward Tuesday puzzle from the Prof. I don’t expect it will present too many difficulties for most as I certainly found it easier than yesterday.

In the following hints, definitions are underlined, indicators are mostly in parentheses, and answers are revealed by clicking where shown as usual. Please leave a comment below on how you got on with the puzzle.

Greetings from Ottawa, where a spell of cold weather has enabled a portion of the Rideau Canal Skateway to open – its earliest opening since December 2018. This follows a couple of disappointing years in which it didn’t open at all two years ago and opened only for a very limited period last year. While we are experiencing cold weather, Edmonton – which would normally be experiencing temperatures as low as -50 C – is reportedly enjoying T-shirt and shorts weather.

Who do you think set today’s puzzle? Are we back to Robyn or is this the “another appearance quite soon” promised by X-Type last week. I’m leaning toward the latter, and despite possessing an abysmal record at recognizing setters, I might even venture a toonie on it.

In the hints below, underlining identifies precise definitions and cryptic definitions, FODDER is capitalized, and indicators are italicized. The answers will be revealed by clicking on the ANSWER buttons.

Please leave a comment telling us what you thought of the puzzle.

proXimal returns with a Spoonerism to start and some compound anagrams. The Spoonerism wasn’t a problem as it was just a transposition of initial letters rather than sounds, but I spent rather a long time mulling over what and where to extract the compound anagrams. I was in a Nabakovian rabbit hole over a simple girls name before sense prevailed.

We have 14a and 14d clues and I have hinted half. If a few tricky ones have hit the cutting room floor I may be able to give a nudge if asked.

Here we go, Folks…

In the olden days (15 years ago!) I was a blogger (on a couple of the other sites) but blog quality and sophistication has improved considerably since.  Me not so much.

My qualification then was that I self-described as a beginner and Peter Biddlecombe (Hi Peter!) wanted to demonstrate that mere mortals such as myself were cryptically capable.

Incidentally, my solving partner (to be introduced) pointed out it’s ironic for us to be writing this blog since this is where we come ourselves for help (thanks Phibs!).

Enough about us…

A very good Sunday morning from Winnipeg where more fluffy white stuff has been falling from the sky – it must have warmed up somewhat.

For me, and I stress for me, quite a challenge from Dada this week. … Continue reading
