Beam comes round regularly every fourth Thursday and this is a typical example of his setting art though fairly gentle if you’re aware of his little tricks. Thanks to him for the enjoyment.

A most enjoyable puzzle and it’s definitely not one of RayT’s, so that leaves…
Ticks from me are awarded to 13a, 15a, 20a, 1d, 7d and 17d, with a double tick to 27a.
Great stuff!

Certainly a chillier start to the day here in Harpenden though it looks like it is trying to brighten up.
Today’s crossword is another gentle affair which should please those that found X-Type’s puzzle tougher than usual for a Monday. As ever an admirable brevity in the clueing. I don’t expect many will need the hints but there’s a few tunes & film clips to click on for any interested.
In the following hints, definitions are underlined, indicators are mostly in parentheses, and answers are revealed by clicking where shown as usual. Please leave a comment below on how you got on with the puzzle.
Morning, and happy Smothering Monday to any Spoonerism fans celebrating. I found today’s crossword harder than any recent Monday backpagers I can remember, managing only 3 across clues on my first pass (though I did better on the downs). However, a lot of my hold-ups were being unable to work out anagrams; those are often the clue type I find hardest but are many solvers’ first answers in, so I’m guessing many of you will find it easier than I did. If you’re also one of the anagram-averse, maybe add another difficulty star.

Karla has given us a very enjoyable puzzle – many thanks to him. I forgot to look for a Nina in his last Toughie so I spent some time searching for one today, all to no avail – if you’ve had more success than I did do let me know!
