A fine day for all the Bank Holiday celebrations around the country. Why not kick off with this pleasing anniversary puzzle (number 25,000) from 24th May 2006 (a Wednesday), by the Classics teacher Ann Tait, one of the Telegraph’s “most important compilers”. I think there are just a few more before the end of this series, and any volunteer hinters are welcome. Just reply to Gazza, and get your nickname in lights

This may well be my last blog in the vintage crossword series, as we edge closer to the puzzles for which a BD blog already exists.  Thanks to Gazza once again for giving me the opportunity. I’ve certainly enjoyed the experience, and it has made me appreciate the expertise and dedication of our regular bloggers.  Today we have a festive puzzle from the prolific setter Roger Squires.

Welcome to my latest, and possibly last effort in this enlightening and enjoyable vintage series. It depends whether Saturday V27 has already been covered on the BD blog, otherwise I can have a go. A few unknown words today, and some tenuous parsings. Our volunteer Deansleigh is in charge tomorrow

Congratulations to Steve Cowling on his first blog yesterday.  Welcome to the Vintage blogging team, Steve!  It took me a while to get going with this puzzle, but once I was on the setter’s wavelength, the answers started to come steadily.  Many thanks to the setter, Richard Browne.

The first crossword to be set by Ruth Crisp and quite a crisp one it is too. It took a while to get into it and I’m still not sure of some of the parsing. There has been much discussion on the blog recently regarding anagram indicators and there are a couple of strange ones here.  Anyway, enjoy today’s offering and please forgive any errors – I haven’t done this before.

Definitions are underlined and if you are really stuck click on “click here!” to reveal the answer.

A gentle start to the week, with this pleasing puzzle from Val Gilbert, who started in 1977. Quite a few anagrams this time, with a smattering of general knowledge needed. I’ve elaborated on 26a – a perfect example of “pour décourager les autres”. Maybe you can think of modern examples, when someone doesn’t deserve their punishment.

Back in the hot seat. Back to normality and forward gear after yesterday’s challenge. Big thanks to Deansleigh. A pleasant solve today with a few tricky parsings.  I’ve had to guess a couple. Delighted to be enlightened

Good afternoon from South Hampshire, where it’s somewhat cooler than yesterday.  Many thanks to Rossophile for blazing the trail for the volunteer vintage puzzle bloggers, and to Gazza for allowing me to try my hand at this one.

I found this to be a baptism of fire!  I didn’t manage to solve the first clue straightaway, and soon came unstuck.  As the DT preamble states, you really have to solve 1a first, but once you’ve done that, things should start to fall into place.
