After some interest yesterday, we have increased our volunteer force. Thanks for stepping forward Deansleigh for Saturday and Steve Cowling for next Tuesday. We know of the setter today (Alan Cash), so retrospective “thanks” may be offered. A 1973 puzzle starting to feel very familiar, with anagrams and sensible indicators, lurkers, charades, and double definitions, and a smattering of general knowedge.

A gentle solve today, with many recognisable constructions. Not much feedback on this blog, so let me know if you want me to continue. I suppose a fun crossword needs to be contemporary and topical, with new material to challenge the solver. I suppose it is difficult to be grateful to a long dead setter!

An erudite offering today, where a grasp of the classics and good general knowledge will help. Starting to feel like our modern puzzles. I was able to hint this more quickly today having discovered the Windows Key + H comes up which brings up a dictation window. Also, Shift, Windows Key and S,  will allow you to open a resizable panel, and copy the contents of another window to the clipboard. The door is still open for any “wannabe” hinters; join this exclusive group on the World’s best crossword blog and get your nickname in lights. Yes hinting, can be harder than solving some clues, but is a rewarding and educational pastime.

Enduring another “heatwave” for 3-4 days, or so we are told by the media.  Yesterday was 28 degrees with some rain, and my water butts are full.  Pervious called an English summer. Another straightforward puzzle from the Sixties, some learned and geographical clues. A few explanations of that time alone, that are open to interpretation.

A return to a more familiar puzzle for contemporary solvers. A tribute to this groundbreaking setter, who started a trend for modern crosswords. As a stand-in hinter working on a DOCX file, my illustrations do not get incorporated into WordPress, without some extra technical work. Here is a sample link to an illustrated solution.

This was written the year after I was born. It might have put me off crosswords (and poetry) for life, had I been able to read and write. However, despite the unconventional clueing, here is my interpretation

The Telegraph crossword has a long history of paying tribute to, and being appreciated by, British royalty. George V’s Silver Jubilee on May 6, 1935, was marked with a special puzzle offering “praise and thanksgiving”. Queen Elizabeth is said to have regularly devoted half an hour to the crossword. For the 100th birthday of the Queen Mother, a special Telegraph crossword about her life was commissioned, enlarged and carried down the Horse Guards Parade. If Her Majesty glanced at the crossword on the day she acceded to the throne, this is what she would have seen.

I expect that one or more of the other puzzles mentioned in the DT preamble above will appear here soon. I am sure Rossophile or Gazza would welcome assistance with blogs. “A volunteer is worth ten pressed men.”

Several things in this crossword wouldn’t be allowed these days, but I do like the image of The Queen having a go at this before heading off to her coronation.
