Having arrived home late from helping to run Henfield’s commemoration of the Battles of Jutland and the Somme centenary, an email from the Gaffer asking me to do today’s blog, and therefore an early rise, wasn’t exactly what I needed.… Continue reading

While pommers (not forgetting pomette) does his filial duties in the f-f-freezing UK, I get to tackle my first Ray T puzzle (for recent recruits to the blog, 6d (Queen) and the Quickie consisting entirely of single word clues, are his trademarks) What can I say? Other than it is a puzzle to bring joy to a dull day. I hope that you all have as much fun solving it as I did. Continue reading “DT 27048”

A particularly poorly cat, and the resulting visit to a local vet, renders Libellule indisposed to review today’s challenge from my observant colleague Rufus. He certainly brightens up a particularly miserable Monday morning in West Sussex with his usual mixture of clean clueing and dry wit.

“Beware, all who enter here!” Big Dave did warn me that this one somehow found its way onto the back page, but really belongs in Toughie Territory.  Have a go – with lateral thinking, and generous helpings of perservation, it is solvable.  I found the “Downs” marginally easier, so you might try that approach. Happy solving! Continue reading “DT 26928”

A glance at the Quickie, and the regal reference in 3d, confirms that we have a Ray T to tackle today. Maybe I was expecting a bit more by way of penny-drop and tee-hee moments, but I found it more workmanlike and stolid that some of Ray T’s recent offerings. Continue reading “DT 26874”

A bit of a re-shuffle in Bloggingland, unfortunately caused by Tilsit being detained at the NHS’s pleasure, affords me another turn in the Hot Seat.  My first effort at blogging – back in the balmy days of January – was a Giovanni puzzle. I commented then that “We have a nicely balanced puzzle today from Giovanni. A good mix of difficulty and clue construction (including a couple of “old chestnuts”) that should please everyone”. Déjà vu all over again?

Maybe it was the effect of a late night, after a gruelling tennis match against mighty Brighton, but I found this at the high end of difficulty for a back-pager. All the clues were solvable with the application of a little preservation, so get stuck in and enjoy it. A satisfying solve.

A reshuffle of the Blogging Brigade means that you get me today, tackling what BD warned me as being a bit tricky. The bark wasn’t perhaps quite as bad as the bite, and I  found it to be a fair and challenging puzzle, with a couple of clues that lifted it just above 3* difficulty. It wouldn’t have been totally out of place on the Toughie page, but regular solvers should not be put off by that.
