“Sneaky, but not sneaky enough!” *reaches for pen and glass of wine* 😜🍷 was my reaction after thinking of the synonym ‘dull’ and groaning heavily with realisation. That sort of moment is why I enjoy the Saturday, so I had no problem at all with 9a.
Speaking of dodgy homonyms, 14a brought back fond memories of Hamish & Dougal on Radio 4:
“Here we are. A cup of tea. A meringue?”
“No, you’re right, that’s a cup of tea all right!” 🤣
Great review of a fun crossword. Stand-outs were 3d, 11d, 12a.
Quite enjoyed this crossword apart from the two references to Christmas in the middle of Summer….actually Summer ended about a month ago here in North Lancashire, so maybe it’s OK!
Thanks to cryptic Sue for explaining a couple of the answers….like the dreaded 9a.
2*/4* …
liked 22D “Satan’s reformed: he brings presents! (5)”
Big stretch to say ilk is style
Did this whilst sitting in a tent in the rain in North Devon. Got the wrong reversal (up) of Christmas but got the French leader. I got ilk as style (1d) but struggled with 9a. Still it passed the time in-between showers💦. Thanks to the setter and Cryptic Sue for the ‘entertainment’.
