Solution

TS ELIOT in LITTLE GIDDING used MOTHER JULIAN of NORWICH’s “ALL SHALL BE WELL AND ALL MANNER OF THING SHALL BE WELL”; HELL-HOLE and HANGMAN provide unchecked perimeter letters.

Setter’s blog on Reassuring by Chalicea

T.S.Eliot was very much the poet to study in my A Level and university years rather a long time ago. I loved the Four Quartets and particularly Little Gidding and that phrase ‘All shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well’ stood out in the context of Eliot’s despair about the world he observed. I was rather surprised when the words were quoted to me when I was going through a rough patch and I learned that they originated with Mother Julian of Norwich.

‘Enough there to fill a grid’, I thought but ‘Oh dear – it won’t fit round the perimeter’. Well, a wise co-compiler pointed out to me that it is possible to use black corners and even begin the quotation anywhere in the perimeter as long as that is signaled to the solver. I wonder how many tried to fit ‘All manner of things’ in. The Internet doesn’t help there either but she certainly said ‘thing’. I hope solvers enjoyed the puzzle and like the reassuring words.
