Greetings from the AAU at Calderdale Hospital. Trying to write today’s blog while having a top-up of antibiotics. However the good folk at Microsoft deemed that if you have the latest version of their product, Office 365, you have to be online to use it! It won’t even let you cut and paste from your template into WordPad. So I have written the explanations into WordPad in the hope a Very Nice Man can transfer them when I manage to find a wifi connection. [I couldn’t find a Very Nice Man so I had to do it myself. BD]
Enough of my rantings about Mr Gates, time to rant about the puzzle. It’s what I would describe as a typical Firefly with some clues to make you smile and one or two that make you wince slightly as they are almost too clever for their own good. One or two of the cryptic definitions here don’t quite hit the mark for me.

Deep Threat is unavailable this morning so I’m making a temporary return to my old stamping ground. I really enjoyed Giovanni’s puzzle today but I thought it was above average in terms of difficulty so I’ve given it four stars. Do you agree or disagree?

A slightly trickier prize puzzle from Cephas this week. My favourite was the nicely defined and well-hidden 8d.

This is the first time I have been exposed to a proXimal Toughie and I struggled throughout. I only got one answer on my first read-through of the clues but this gave me a toehold in the SE corner from which I managed to fill the left-hand side of the grid without too many problems. I then stalled completely on the left-had side and I had to tease out just about every answer. It was definitely my slowest solve of a Toughie for a long, long time. I’m not sure why I found it so difficult because all the clues are perfectly fair and I didn’t have to do much head scratching to untangle the wordplay. I’ll be interested to know how the rest of you fared so I can see if it was just me who couldn’t get on proXimal’s wavelength.

Hola from the Vega Baja. I quite enjoyed this puzzle but I know some of you will disagree. There seems to be more than the usual fiddling about with first and/or last letters and bits of words and a few slightly obscure meanings of words. Still, a pleasant accompaniment to the morning cuppa.

Morning All!. There were a couple of sticklers that I kicked myself after solving but the usual excellence shines through because of that fact!

This took me some time and when I’d finished I wasn’t quite sure why. I managed to drag the name of the footballer up from the dark recesses but I imagine he’ll be unknown to many. There are some really good clues here so thanks to Elkamere for the challenge.
