Another month, another Monthly Prize Puzzle. Why not have a go at it?
As is usual for the weekend prize crosswords, an assortment of clues, including some of the more difficult ones, have been selected and hints provided for them.

Why not have a go at our latest Monthly Prize Puzzle? As last month’s winner, Kiwi Colin, was ineligible for the prize it has rolled over to this month. The winner will receive “The Daily Telegraph Cracking Cryptic Crosswords Collection” – four books of daily puzzles in a slipcase, kindly donated by Tilsit.

I found this to be a good workout for a Friday Toughie. Some of the wordplay I had to derive after finding the answer, but it was all fair and square.

Good morning from North Devon where Summer has finally arrived and all’s well with the world. I didn’t think that there was anything too difficult in today’s puzzle (one word that I didn’t know but the wordplay made it very straightforward). Do let us know how you got on.

A very nice Prize Puzzle from Cephas – the right level of difficulty to leave plenty of time for other Saturday activities, and a nice mix of clues, including some lovely anagram indicators.

Elkamere had apologised in advance for “one very obscure grid entry. It was forced by having to change an answer with unfortunate connotations but two of its checkers couldn’t be changed, resulting in almost zero alternatives”. From this I assumed that the two checkers must be thematic and so it proved although they were nothing to do with July 4th and Independence Day. I made heavier weather of the puzzle than perhaps I ought to have done but I found it to be a very enjoyable challenge

Before solving 14 down I was pretty sure that Petitjean was today’s setter – after it I was certain! I thought this was a curate’s egg of a puzzle (good in parts).
