Apart from a couple of answers, both of which were obvious from the wordplay, this could have easily been a back-page puzzle.

I made a complete dog’s breakfast of 1a at the start, but once I’d sorted that out this enjoyable puzzle by Shamus didn’t take overlong. How did you find it?
If you want to see an answer highlight the space between the brackets under the relevant clue.

This is not one of Rufus’ best crosswords…
I also see that the Telegraph puzzles site continues to be a problem. If you are having trouble accessing it try a little later, and keep trying – eventually you should be able to log on.

As is usual for the weekend prize crosswords, I will select a few of the better clues and provide hints for them.

Tilsit and I were going to share the honours today with me doing the across hints and him the downs, but it seems that he prefers the company of the pretty nurses at the hospital, so I’ve done his bit as well!
As is usual with an Elgar puzzle, there are too many excellent clues to be able to single out favourites.

We have the usual entertaining Friday puzzle from Giovanni. Let us know how you got on with it (and do have a go at the Quickie pun – it’s very good).
If you want to see an answer just highlight the space between the brackets under the relevant clue.

Morning All!. I think that everyone agreed on the day that this was a fairly straightforward puzzle from Cephas but I still enjoyed that solve and also the review. For those wondering about the Chinese influence in this review may I draw your attention to the correspondence below regarding my review of DT 26437 with reference to 21a in that puzzle!

[Today is another milestone – this is the 500th Toughie (excluding online-only specials) that has been reviewed on this site! BD]
This was by far the most enjoyable Thursday Toughie for some time. I found it to be of above average difficulty and it needed a lot of thought to work out some of the wordplay. But it was all perfectly fair and contained nothing particularly obscure (with the possible exception of the answer to 13 across).

The best thing about this puzzle for me was that it was all over very quickly. Eleven of the twenty-eight clues involved an anagram – which should please some of you.

Like others I’ve had a frustrating morning with the on-line site. Luckily I managed to print out the puzzle, but my attempts to submit the answers were met with the infuriating clock whizzing round and a multitude of “Error 0 Occurred” responses before the thing died completely. Since I wasn’t prepared to type all the answers in again I’m not able to give a 100% guarantee that all my solutions are correct (but I’m pretty confident).
In spite of all the hassle I did enjoy this puzzle which has some lovely penny-drop moments. Let us know what you thought in a comment.
