Hello, everyone, and welcome to the final Friday puzzle of 2025.  I struggled to get on wavelength today, likely the result of trying to hint alter an indulgent Christmas Day.  Continue reading "DT 31120"

A zinger from Django today – a real treat. I must thank the Telegraph’s top brass and one of our very own top brass – Gazza – for gifting me a copy to blog in advance. It has – just about – kept me out of the doghouse. I did make the mistake of giving a woman (i.e. my mother-in-law) summat with a plug on – a sin that my urbane godfather told me years ago never to commit. In my defence, I remain convinced she’ll learn to love it! Merry Christmas everyone.

Good morning, fellow puzzlers and a very happy and peaceful Christmas to you all.

Silvanus claimed ownership of today’s puzzle in last Friday’s comments.  I found it suitably seasonal, not too challenging and great fun to solve. Perhaps he is being gentle with us, knowing that many of us will not have much spare time to sneak in a quick solve without getting told off by senior management.

I have added plenty of images to enjoy, as it is Christmas, but I hope that these do not give the answers away too much.  If they do, please accept my apologies.

My ticks are for Prokofiev’s piece at 5a, the neat anagram at 15a, the rings at 1d, the setter getting fired at 6d and the seat that Starmer lost at 20d. Which did you like?

Many thanks to Silvanus and to the DT Crossword Team.

Greetings once again from the Wirral.  Yes, you must be on the Big Dave De-colonised Universal Non-Patriarchal Behavioural Trait  List, and you’ve got me blogging for a second day in succession.  Things Can Only Get Better… but then look how that turned out!

Stick Insect, to whom, many thanks, has given us a very gentle puzzle by normal Wednesday standards, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable solve.  The boundary clues were all solved pretty quickly which aided the process, with just a few that took a bit more thinking about (and which pretty much occupy my podium spots) but nothing too drastic. My prizes places go to 7d, 17a, with 25a with 27a equal at the top for their condensed cleverness.

Merry Christmas to all of the setters, bloggers, commenters and readers who don’t comment (and I’d love to hear from you)!

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas.

I know that today can be a mad rush to get everything ready for the big day but I hope that you’ll have time between wrapping the last-minute present and preparing the sprouts to tackle this entertaining puzzle and let us know your thoughts on it. I enjoyed it a lot – many thanks to our setter.

Welcome to the Toughie Week, one and all.  Summer is on its way!  Let’s just hope it isn’t travelling by train…

One of the benefits of the dark mornings is that the local tawny owls are heading home to roost at a relatively civilised hour, which fits with my normal walk with Lord Alfie. I’ve managed to see them twice at close quarters  in the past week, and been alarmed by nearby, loud hooting.

I must confess I was expecting something rather more festive on the crossword front this morning.  What we have is the complete opposite, and whilst I did not enjoy the gloomy (not to say apocalyptic)  theme early in the day, this has grown on me as I’ve dug around a bit more. Not being very clued up on Saints’ Days, it was only when I started ferreting, that I discovered that 27th Dec is the feast day for St John the Divine. The theme is therefore suitably seasonal, in a cryptic sense entirely suited to the medium!  The puzzle is very clever, and there are a couple of clues I thought were great. There are a few “gimmes” to get the ball rolling, and a few obscurities to significantly raise the difficulty level.  10a and 27a get honourable mentions, 14a sneakily gets into second, but my prize today goes to 26d by a fair distance.

Thanks to Donnybrook for the challenge and the learning opportunities.

Please leave a comment telling us how you fared and what you liked about the puzzle.
