Greetings from the Calder Valley. Thanks to BD for helping out last Friday when my hospital appointment got messy. I managed to make the Crossword Meet at Birmingham the following day and it was a joy to meet up with Rufus and Eric Westbrook, as well as the other setters and solvers. Thanks to Anax for a grand day and there are some great pictures around especially those taken by Jane Teather. I’m not a fan of pictures of myself, but this is quite a decent one of me wrestling with the Anax special puzzle!

If you solve your cryptics in the newspaper or were able to convince the Telegraph Puzzles website to cooperate, then like me you had a lovely treat of a crossword from Virgilius again this week. The top half went in quite quickly but the bottom half was another story, particularly the SW corner where I was held up by several of the craftier clues. As to my favourite clues – as Brucie might say ‘they’re nearly all my favourites’!!

We have a fairly straightforward but entertaining puzzle from Giovanni today. Let us know how you got on with it.
To reveal an answer drag your cursor through the space between the brackets under the clue.

Morning All!. It was fun to provide the hints on the day and my solving time put this into the 3-star territory although a few clues caused some discussion on the day so it may have been harder for some. Reviewing the puzzle a few days later I realized that there were loads of clues here which I found to be well constructed and have given it four stars for enjoyment.

Another fairly straightforward puzzle from Kcit which is on the easy side for a Toughie. Once I’d finished this puzzle I started on the one in today’s Times. That proved to be a real toughie and took me 3 or 4 times longer to complete than this one did. So if anyone feels like a challenge may I recommend today’s Times puzzle.

For the second day in a row I’ve got a Shamus puzzle to review. I was convinced that this was going to be a pangram after getting 10a and 12a – it isn’t but it does have some really good clues and I enjoyed it.

Hello from the Vega Baja. A pleasant, and not too hard, offering this week from our Wednesday Wizard. I seem to have used quite a bit of blue highlighter on this one so I’ve given it 4* for enjoyment.

Apart from a couple of answers, both of which were obvious from the wordplay, this could have easily been a back-page puzzle.

I made a complete dog’s breakfast of 1a at the start, but once I’d sorted that out this enjoyable puzzle by Shamus didn’t take overlong. How did you find it?
If you want to see an answer highlight the space between the brackets under the relevant clue.
