What Happened to Grockle, Heckle and Jekyll?

Regular Toughie solvers will know that MynoT is currently working his way through the consonants and that his last puzzle covered F, so, having found out last night that he was today’s setter, I set about polishing an alliterative sub-title using plenty of Gs. All to no avail, because he’s skipped a few letters.
I have to admire the skill that goes into compiling a puzzle like this, but it necessitates the use of some pretty obscure words and seems a bit forced so I didn’t enjoy it that much. Let us know your thoughts.

What an Effin’ Toughie!

The first thing I did with this Mynot puzzle was to determine which letter he has reached in his journey through the alphabet. Once that was established it was a fairly easy solve which I might well have given ** for difficulty had I not stalled on the last couple of clues.

With some of MynoT’s alphabetically themed puzzles it can take a while before the penny drops. With this one it became evident very quickly that it was an old pre-1971 penny!

A Load of C

Greetings from the Calder Valley. Bufo and I have swapped duties this week as I have a couple of hospital appointments tomorrow. Thanks to him for agreeing to this. I eagerly awaited the appearance of the puzzle at midnight and my heart sank when I saw it was by MynoT, who I have to say is not one of my favourite setters. My gloom deepened when I saw the grid full of double unchecked squares (another bête-noir) and so I set to.

However, I was pleasantly surprised and appreciated the effort that went into the puzzle. I am aware that for the gimmick hidden within the puzzle (all the answers contain the letter C) to work, you probably need to use a grid like this, so I’ll say no more on the topic (cue sighs of relief from the TCE!). Not up to the really high standards of the past few puzzles, but still a worthy member of the Toughie canon.

This puzzle was fair enough but it was by no means up to the standard that we have become accustomed to over the past couple of weeks. As usual with MynoT puzzles there is a theme.

{All the answers contain the letter “B”. I wonder if he’s going to work his way through the consonants. If so I look forward to The “J”, “Q” and “X” puzzles.Select the space between the curly brackets to reveal the theme.

Something fishy!

When you see MynoT as the setter there is usually a theme in the offing but, apart from a few fishy references, there doesn’t seem to be anything today. [Wrong again!  Thanks to Qix for pointing out that the theme is a work from a series by Edith Sitwell.]

Where’s the pot of gold?

With this puzzle MynoT reaches the end of the rainbow. It has as its theme the final two colours of the rainbow with several answers being appropriately coloured. I started very quickly and thought I was on target for a very quick solve but I did then slow down a little. Even so I found it to be at the easier end of the Toughie spectrum.

Blue is the Colour

MynoT’s puzzles often follow a theme. Currently he is working his way through the colours of the rainbow and this week it’s the turn of blue. I have highlighted, in blue of course, as many of the clues and answers that are in some way linked to the theme as I can.

With this puzzle MynoT passes the half-way stage on his rainbow quest with several answers being connected with the colour green. I found no real difficulty in filling the grid though I did have to then check and confirm a few things.

The last two MynoT puzzles were tinged with red and orange and so it seemed reasonable to assume that this one would have a yellow theme. So it proved. Several answers are things that are coloured yellow and others are words that can follow yellow. I found the puzzle to be fairly easy and it won’t count as one of my favourites.
