While still tougher than most, I found this Toughie from Elgar to be a bit easier than usual.  I managed, or hope I did, to unravel all but one of the clues unaided.

The Rolls Royce of Toughies!

How I look forward to alternate Fridays!  It took me quite a while to get into the CluedUp site this morning, but it was well worth the wait.  The hardest thing about Elgar’s puzzles is not finding the answers (which is difficult at the best of times) but getting a full resolution of the wordplay.

When you see Elgar’s name you know you are in for a difficult time.  This one is certainly no exception.  There were a mere handful of relatively easy clues, and some where, despite getting the answer, I have struggled to get all of the wordplay.  If you have seen anything that I missed, please add a comment.

Elgar was at the Sloggers and Betters evening last week, but he didn’t warn me that this one was in the pipeline.

Another five star performance from Elgar

Once again Elgar serves up a Toughie that is worthy of the name.  Always tough, always enjoyable, each answer has to be carefully extracted.   Even after I had completed it, I still had to sort out the wordplay for four of the clues.

Elgar sets the standard that others must follow

Elgar has consistently set Toughies that are Tough, and this one is no exception.  To say that is easier than some of Elgar’s previous puzzles doesn’t mean it is easy.  For those that do battle with this puzzle, the reward is in the satisfaction of completing it.  But don’t worry if you get stuck – you can find all of the answers here.

I approached this puzzle with some trepidation, bearing in mind the date, wondering what tricks the compiler had in store. Actually it offers a thoroughly entertaining battle with some tricky wordplay and some delightful clues (the best of which is slightly risqué!).

A difficult but enjoyable puzzle

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

BD Rating – Difficulty ***** Enjoyment *****

A difficult puzzle, with a phrase that spreads over three clues.  This was made even more difficult online as the order of the second and third clues was not immediately obvious.  I think the best way to tackle this particular puzzle is to complete the centre block of 6 clues and then work outwards from there, although 1 across and 2 down give a good foothold into the top part.

An excellent, challenging puzzle

This puzzle has 5 stars for both difficulty and enjoyment.  I knew soon after starting that it was going to be a struggle, but as I opened up each clue, I began to enjoy the contest.  I will be interested to know what Dr B, my American friend, makes of this one as some of the clues have a uniquely British flavour.  As usual, the links provide additional content which is usually useful, occassionally totally frivolous.
