Elgar has consistently set Toughies that are Tough, and this one is no exception. To say that is easier than some of Elgar’s previous puzzles doesn’t mean it is easy. I approached this puzzle with some trepidation, bearing in mind the date, wondering what tricks the compiler had in store. Actually it offers a thoroughly entertaining battle with some tricky wordplay and some delightful clues (the best of which is slightly risqué!).

Toughie No 106 by Elgar
A difficult but enjoyable puzzle

A difficult puzzle, with a phrase that spreads over three clues. This was made even more difficult online as the order of the second and third clues was not immediately obvious. I think the best way to tackle this particular puzzle is to complete the centre block of 6 clues and then work outwards from there, although 1 across and 2 down give a good foothold into the top part.

An excellent, challenging puzzle

This puzzle has 5 stars for both difficulty and enjoyment. I knew soon after starting that it was going to be a struggle, but as I opened up each clue, I began to enjoy the contest. I will be interested to know what Dr B, my American friend, makes of this one as some of the clues have a uniquely British flavour. As usual, the links provide additional content which is usually useful, occassionally totally frivolous.
