Afternoon All!. When Prolixic emailed this to me to test solve he said that he wanted to create a puzzle that would include definitions and terms that would be more accessible to younger solvers.

I’ve uses the blue highlight pencil for only the very best of today’s superb crop of clues. Notabilis just keeps getting better and better.

A fairly swift report today, as I’ve just realised I need to blog today’s Times elsewhere. Big Dave and I can both make Brian’s requested gathering on 3rd October, and we’re on the case for pub selection. I found this relatively tricky overall, mainly because 5D kept me busy for a shocking 4 minutes at the end.

We have a pretty typical Giovanni today, with well-constructed clues and a few “aha” moments. Let us know what you liked, or disliked, about it in a comment.

I found this to be a toughie of above-average difficulty. There were some nice touches but I thought it was spoilt by some rather dodgy anagram indicators.

I know that giving this puzzle two stars for difficulty will not please many, but I have based this on my solving time and the fact that, apart from two clues which caused me an extra moment’s thought, I had no trouble at all with this excellent offering from Cephas. Just the right mix of clue types to produce an entertaining Saturday puzzle.

Certainly one of the better Thursday puzzles. The wordplay for 5a threw me for a while but I smiled when I eventually got it.
