Afternoon All!. We had a pretty tricky puzzle from Virgilius which I downgraded to *** difficulty as I was being a bit dense on the Sunday Solving. The enjoyment of the wordplay, however, warrants a **** in my book. What makes increases the difficulty here is Virgilius’ accomplishment of superb surface readings and aptly chosen synonyms – you look and gasp sometimes (particularly the two &Lit clues). There is a convincing story that is very difficult to crack to get the real definition.

Giovanni follows his excellent Toughie yesterday with a less tough but still very enjoyable back-page puzzle. How did you fare? Leave us a comment!
If, as a last resort, you want to see an answer, highlight the space between the brackets beneath the troublesome clue.

The usual straightforward start to a Saturday morning from Cephas (thank you to him), this time with leanings to the French side of the Channel and the added bonus of a Pangram. The clues I particularly liked are highlighted in blue.

Trickier than many a Giovanni Toughie (but none the worse for that). The northeast corner eluded me for a time when I had to think hard about 4 down and 6 down.

Hola from the Vega Baja. A real piece of Wednesday wizardry today! Some very clever clues, good surfaces and some great ‘penny drop’ moments! I’ve given 3* for difficulty but I’ll leave that up to you to comment on. I don’t actually know my solving time as I got into the website, clicked print and it chucked me out. 45 minutes later, when I finally got back in and the puzzle opened, the clock was already running from my first attempt!

Today’s puzzle is not too exacting and doesn’t have many “penny drop” moments. Let us know your thoughts in a comment.
If you want to see an answer just drag your cursor through the space between the brackets under the clue.
