This week we are writing from Wellington. We have been inveigled into being grandchildren minders for a few days. As we are technophobes, we arrived here nice and early to be sure we could connect up the Wi-Fi and printer as we like them. Whew, it all worked as we hoped and we’re sure that we can cope with the interruption when we have to collect Milly from Kindergarten mid-afternoon too.
Good stuff again from Jay that should keep all the regulars happy as it did us. Don’t forget the Quickie pun too. It’s an absolute groaner!

We had a few days of colder weather with rain in some areas that coincided with the opening events of the world cup cricket,
however it did not last long and we have returned to beautifully fine clear late summer days. It is getting a little nippier in the
mornings too but we have not yet been moved to change from sandals and shorts for our daily walks.
We have several birds in the puzzle to go with the Jay and the 2Kiwis, and also thought we had found another. But it wasn’t! The non-bird held us up a bit in the SE corner.

On our regular walk this morning we particularly noted that the Bar-tailed Godwits are looking plump now and changing to their rust coloured plumage in preparation for their imminent departure for Alaska. Other birds that we noticed were the little Wrybills. Quite small birds by wading bird standards with eponymous shaped bills that curve to the right. They scuttle frantically across the sand like out of control clockwork models in search of sand-hoppers to eat. However the highlight has to be the flock of 18a’s that were resting on a sand spit close to our path.
Today’s Jay puzzle is well up to the standard we have come to expect and enjoy.

After a record-breaking dry January, we have at last had a few days of rain that has been much appreciated by farmers and gardeners. This coming weekend is a long holiday one here for Waitangi Day (we don’t call them Bank Holidays here, but the same thing) and we are hoping the weather returns to dry again as we are expecting an invasion of family, intending to pitch their tents on the lawn.
A good fun puzzle again from Jay, slightly trickier, we thought, than last week’s.

Our Pohutukawa trees which were a little late this year to deserve their title of New Zealand Christmas trees are now in full bloom. We have three vivid crimson beacons from our house to the river, and a spell of brilliant mid-summer weather too. Marvellous!

Throughout the land fireworks will be set off and many voices will be raised in appalling raucous renditions of Auld Lang Syne……..but not here. We expect to be happily asleep by then. The last of our family visitors left yesterday.
