Extra letters give I WENT THE WHOLE HOG, TOTUS PORCUS, a statement attributed to ADMIRAL FISHER along with those in the perimeter.

Setter’s blog:

The amusing comments made by Admiral Fisher gave me an irresistible theme. His astonishing career in the Navy makes very entertaining and informative reading. Wikipedia tells us:

  • Fisher is credited by the Oxford English Dictionarywith the earliest known use of the phrase “OMG” as an abbreviation for “Oh my God”, in a letter to Winston Churchill on 9 September 1917. In Fisher’s case it was “Oh! My God!”
  • Fisher coined the phrase “Buggins’ turn” to describe the practice of making appointments by rotationor seniority rather than by merit, which he saw as a problem within the navy.

His conviction that imagination was needed and that it was an error to simply obey orders was a key to his success as an admiral.

The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations tells us that in a letter to the Times, he said “Sack the lot!” as a comment on the government’s overmanning and overspending (yes, we’re hearing a lot about that!)

However, it was learning that, also in a letter to Churchill, he declared “I went the whole hog – totus porcus” that amused me the most.

I was delighted to find that I could fit four of his statements into the perimeter of my grid and used one of the easier devices, those extra letters, with spaces between the words, to give his ‘totus porcus’.  Of course, the title had to be ‘Pig Latin’.
