BD Rating – Toughie Difficulty */**Enjoyment *****

Another great Toughie from Serpent with some brilliant, and often misleading, surface readings.  I have looked and looked and can’t see anything hidden in the grid although the black squares in the shape of a cross might be telling us that Serpent is aware that this is one of those ‘four crosswords in one’ where each corner of the grid is solved separately (in my case SE + NW + SW +NE)

Please leave a comment telling us what you thought

  1. Spot on, as ever. This was a real banger and the “gentlest” Serpent ever gets, I reckon. I actually spent more time looking for the Nina that I couldn’t find (hugely relieved that Sue couldn’t either!) than on the solve itself. Very toothsome. 23d’s non-Spooner is especially brilliant. Loved it. Huge thanks to Serpent and CS.

  2. Serpent’s wearing his comfy slippers rather than his hobnailed boots today but the puzzle is really excellent. Thanks to him and CS.
Add me to those who spent an age looking for a Nina.
    Amongst the clues I ticked were 27a, 30a, 8d and 23d.

  3. I agree with them above but add the neat little 21a to the lists of faves.
    Thanks to Serpent and CS.

  4. Just the sort of toughie I love. Eminently doable but with enough misdirections to make it fun. I enjoyed the non Spooner and many others.
    Thanks to Serpent and CS

PS. I have to enter my name snd email everytime i comment even though i tick the box “save me”

    1. There’s a problem where if Mr K reinstates the remember me option, the site stops working!

  5. A super puzzle and very doable. Everything slotted into place nicely until the Spoonerism, as I thought. My answer had to be what it was but I just couldn’t parse it. Now thanks to you Sue it’s all clear and so very clever. For that I have to make it joint favourite with 30A.
Thank you Sue for shining the light and to Serpent for the enjoyment.

  6. Many thanks to crypticsue for the excellent blog and to everyone who has taken the time to leave a comment. It’s very gratifying to see how much everyone has enjoyed the puzzle!

  7. Thoroughly enjoyable solve for us. 27a gets our vote for top clue.
    Thanks Serpent and CS.

  8. The school food just pipped the non Spoonerism as my pick of a delightfully gentle Toughie that wasn’t any trickier than T’s back-pager. Very enjoyable indeed & a shame it hasn’t attracted more comment.
Thanks to Serpent & to Sue.

  9. I don’t attempt the Toughie very often but glad I had a go with this one.

Solved quite a few clues and was close to solving several others.

    Thanks to all.
