CONSUMMATE: Rook here is not the chess piece  but a transitive verb to fleece or deceive CON, the move in chess is the ultimate one MATE,  and they go around (without) the problem is a mathematical one SUM.  Accomplished or skilful CONSUMMATE

CORE: A necessary household task CHORE,  lose the chemical symbol for hydrogen H. Leaving the CORE or nucleus

LITMUS TEST: Synonyms of intoxicated LIT, and essential MUST, and the plural abbreviation of a recreational drug E’S, and T for time
