A typical Giovanni Toughie, with some [fairly clued but not often used] words, a chance to brush up on your Latin (especially useful if you were in the German stream at school), and an ear worm to boot!

A distinct reduction in obscurities (in fact the only word I’d never heard of was 15a) made this Giovanni puzzle enjoyable for me – many thanks to him and to CS.
My last answer was 12a so that’s my favourite clue accompanied on the podium by 4d and 11d.
I found this a challenging Wednesday Toughie. With Giovanni, we always have to be aware of Latin terms or religious GK. My ticks went to 9A 15A and 19D. For me the podium is 14D for its neatness. Thanks to CS and Giovanni.
Very enjoyable and and a few great surfaces, like the old prior picking flowers for his home. Good mix of clue types. About **/*** I guess. Thanks to Giovanni and CS.
By the way, CS, whilst I haven’t got the foggiest idea about physics, etc, I think the speed in 26d is light not sound.
I spent so long checking things, I obviously went wrong with that one. I’ve corrected the hint
One tackles a Toughie by this setter fully expecting not to know all the words and this was no different, though only a couple today.
I really enjoyed it and was able to piece it together with the aid of wordplay, checkers and the odd reference to Mr Google.
I thought 12a&2d amusing, I always appreciate a reverse anagram as per 11d, 17d was very clever (and not very PC…but I’m ok with that) and 23d a real lol. Could have mentioned more.
Many thanks to Giovanni and Sue for the entertainment
I don’t really get the first part of 21a, is the 3rd letter some reference to agent ?
Thanks to Giovanni and CS.
PRO (Public Relations Officer) FOR MA
Ah officer. Thanks.
We managed to dredge the name of the 15a plants from the depths of memory but this was the only unfamiliar word for us. Precisely crafted clues as ever from this setter and a pleasure to solve.
Thanks Giovanni and CS.
Thankfully not full of the usual quota of obscurities but it’s still a DNF as yet. 12&15a + 3d refusing to yield but I’ll resist a letter checker reveal & Sue’s hints in the hope that a penny or three will drop. 1a my fav of those I’ve got for no other reason than it’s such a great word I always think.
Thanks to Giovanni & to CS whose review I’ll read once the towel has been thrown in.
Saw 3d within a couple of mins this morning but needed the hints for the other two.
An enjoyable and rewarding puzzle, nicely crafted. ***/****. Thanks to all.
