Today Beam becomes the latest setter to reach a century of Toughies and I seem to have blogged more than my fair share of them. Not that I mind because I always enjoy them and today’s was no exception. Mind you I think I was not quite with it today because I made far harder work of this Beam puzzle than I usually do. But I got there in the end though some of the parsing needed winkling out. Continue reading “Toughie 2285”

Hola from a rather soggy Vega Baja.  No, I’ve not signed the pledge (as if I ever would) but I have dried out a bit.  In the early hours of yesterday we had over four inches of rain in about two hours so everywhere was more than a bit moist.  At least the weather has since returned to normal service and both me and the village have (mostly) dried out. It don’t rain here very often but when it does it’s best to batten down the hatches and make sure the drains are running free.
I don’t know who today’s setter is but he or she has provided us with a very nice puzzle with more than a usual number of cryptic definitions.  It’s not too tricky and there a few anagrams to give you a start if you need it. I really enjoyed it so I’ll be interested to hear your views of it.

It wouldn’t be a Giovanni Toughie if it didn’t have a few terms I didn’t know but the only one which gave me any significant problems was 5d where I was thrown by the unusual spelling.… Continue reading

Kia ora from Aotearoa.

When summer gets extended somewhat longer than the norm we have the expression “Indian Summer” to describe it. If there is a similar expression to describe a winter that goes on past its recommended use-by date, it is one that we don’t know. At the bottom of the post we have put a photo we took two days ago looking across some wetlands of our estuary towards the Tararua ranges with a fresh mantle of snow.

Another Wednesday treat from Jay for us all to solve.

New Theme

Update October 23, 2019

What I hope will be the final changes to the “Big Dave 2019” theme. have been implemented  There are a small number of cosmetic changes, but the big difference is in the Responsive Design – a posh way of saying that the theme adjusts according to the width of the display.  While a desktop may be able to vary the size of the browser window, for other devices, such as phones and tablets, this is usually a fixed size. Hello, everyone.  I found this less of a challenge than last Tuesday's puzzle.  I have no idea who the setter might be, so if our setter should happen to visit the site to read our comments, perhaps they could also leave a comment of their own?

Last week I had to abandon an attempt to collect data on your solving experiences because of problems with the survey.  The goal is to measure how long most of us took to solve a specific puzzle and whether we used any aids, because I believe that the data will be reassuring to solvers who feel that they take longer than everyone else.  The brief survey should now work properly.  Click here to open it in a new window.  Thanks in advance for your responses.  I'll present the results next Tuesday.

Good morning from The Hundred Acre Wood. Piglet and I enjoyed this puzzle which produced smiles and groans along the way. How strange to begin at the end. We both agree that it is only a crossword puzzle, a pastime, a mere bagatelle, a fleeting moment in life that will be soon forgotten. Continue reading “DT 29133”
