Update 16th April
All that this test seems to have proved is that the second option works for fewer people than the first one. I have a third option but it needs some work before trying it out. In the meantime i have disabled the second option as it was causing problems with the spoiler I was using for the FAQ.
I have been aware for several weeks that the spoiler facilty used to hide the answers is not working for everyone. I have tracked down a different system, but it requires that the code be manually inserted before and after every word that is to be hidden, which means that it is not viable as it stands. If it works then I will try to merge the best features of each, but that is new territory for me and might take some time. Before embarking on this project it seems sensible to see if it is going to work for everyone.
Below you will see two identical hints, the first uses the existing system and the second the new system. Please let me know in a comment which ones work for you. While I need feedback from a number of people, I am particularly interested in hearing from those for whom the existing system is not working.
1. Journalists plot to divide mates, potentially (10)
SUBEDITORS: The kind of plot found in a garden or allotment inside (to divide) some potential mates or love interests
Option 2 has been removed
I have removed the crossword grid as it looked like it was interfering with the test.
Either system works for me
I can also see (and fill in the grid) I would be overjoyed with that system as I can’t get my paper out at ahem work…
Welcome to the blog Drew
I’m afraid that puzzle is this weeks Rookie puzzle not a Telegraph one. You can have a go at it here:
Both work for me, although curiously, the first example does not go back under cover when you retap it on the iPad, whilst the second one does. On the regular blog, I never have any trouble with the usual format.
My comment is exactly the same as YS’s – word for word.
Thanks for all the trouble you take, Dave
Both work for me.
I too can use both of them using google chrome – I can also see & then hide the second version with a click.
Both work for me. Windows 10/Chrome on my laptop. Same on tab/phone, android.
Haven’t been having any problem thus far but, of the two examples shown, the first is fine – the second has the answer revealed.
Windows 7/Explorer/laptop.
Both work for me. Using Firefox and Windows 10.
Not Registered here, but do look in regularly. The reveal feature will not work if an AdBlocker is in use. Users can simply disable Ad Blocking on this Site and all will be well.
Welcome to the blog Gordon
I use an adblocker, but it dosnt seem to affect me.
I’ve got Adblock Plus enabled on Firefox and I’ve never had a problem with the reveal feature.
I disable my adblocker on this site because it’s worth supporting and the ads are not intrusive. (Just turned it on to check, and can’t see a difference in spoiler behaviour.)
I hadn’t had problems lately but here I can click on the first one, the second one is a non-working grey blur and I can see the crossword. Google Chrome on my tablet
When I tapped the first on on my iPad it opened up and said click here. The blurry one cleared and said subeditors
On my windows phone the first one is hidden but can’t hide it again once revealed. The other is not hidden at all.
Windows 10 – Chrome. Firefox and (unfortunately) Microsoft Edge (?) all work for me.
Both are hidden and reveal OK. The first doesn’t hide itself on a second click but the second one does. Odd because I have, had no problems with the current system but on this post . . . ?
I can see the grid and all it’s functions work.
Windows 10 and Chrome on a laptop.
Exactly the same using Firefox.
on windows XP Firefox both work but first one cannot be hidden back either.
Both systems can be seen by me on both iPad and desktop using Windows 8. No previous problems experienced save when the website was a bit iffy a few weeks ago.
Both systems work for me. Running Windows 10, Google Chrome Version 49.0.2623.112.
Oh, but whatever you’d done to the FAQ has made them completely useless…
I think there is a name clash there. I’ll leave it as is for the moment and point the FAQ to the old-style page.
Both work but 2nd has answer already revealed.
Both work on my iPad iOS 9.3.1. The 2Ks review were all visible.
All work on my iPad.
Well, that’s strange. My laptop is Windows 10 (home) and on IE the spoilers have been perfectly behaved to date. Not so above: The first one I can only click once to reveal and it won’t click back; the second is not hiding the answer at all.
It’s exactly the same story on my android tab with its rubbish native browser.
On my android phone with Chrome, I can ditto YS’s comment #2.
(Javascript fine on all devices.)
I’m on Windows 7, with Chrome, and the first is hidden until it is clicked, but won’t click back. The second is hidden, but when the cursor is over it, it becomes just about readable! Clicking makes it fully readable.
Im using IE11 and the first is hidden until it is clicked, but won’t click back. The second clue isn’t hidden at all
Welcome to the blog, Gaz.
Windows 7/Firefox – First is hidden and reveals when clicked but won’t click back. Second is hidden and after repeated clicking will reveal briefly but immediately reverts to hidden.
Windows 10/Firefox – First is hidden and reveals when clicked but won’t click back. Second works ok.
Grid is visible on both.
(Update after removal of grid)
Windows 7/Firefox – First works fine. Second only works spasmodically – i.e. I have to click it several times to get it to change and the same to get it to change back.
Windows 10/Firefox – Both now work fine.
Windows 10 with Opera.
First will reveal but not re-conceal.
Second works fine.
Grid seems fine.
Three platforms in use here. On every one both methods work perfectly and re-conceal, re-unconceal, re-re-conceal etc. with a single click. Following up on Vancouverbc’s comments about the 2K’s blog, I tried that too and it worked perfectly for me on all platforms:
1. iPad Air IOS 9.3.1
2. iPhone 6 IOS 9.3.1
3. Mac OSX El Capitan 10.11.4 Safari 9.1
I also downloaded Chrome to the iPad for an extra test and that worked flawlessly too (Chrome 49.2623.109).
We’re all Apple here as you see – a decision made well before retirement where, at work and in an IT role, I used Windows and IE, so did the same at home. Now everything works together properly and not a trace of Windows. Yippee!
First one works for me. The second is visible. Thanks BD for all your effort.
Now you’ve removed the grid both are working perfectly.
The second works for me. It wasn’t working before.
Both work on my laptop (Windows 10/ Firefox, no adblocker) and my wife’s laptop (Windows 10/ Chrome, with adblocker)
The second one doesn’t work on my Android phone or my wife’s Android tablet. (no adblocker in either case).
