I haven’t counted them but I did get the strong feeling while typing the explanations that there do seem to be a considerable number of charade-type clues in last Saturday’s Prize Puzzle.

I started to solve this puzzle without knowing the setter which was quite nice because I had no preconceptions as to whether it was going to be a worthwhile solve or not.… Continue reading

Hola from the Vega Baja where I’m running a little late due to oversleeping, oops. I blame the final glass of vino collapso!
This is a pretty good puzzle which was comfortably in 2* time until I got to the SW corner which refused to reveal itself easily so 3* it will have to be. We had a load of firewood arrive this morning, ready for cosy winter evenings in front of the fire coming up. Looking forward to our Wednesday homework arriving at 11am instead of 1pm when the clocks get rescheduled in a few weeks.
Another fine offering from our consistent quality setter, Jay. Took us a while to get into the top few, but it flowed smoothly after that.

The more I get into crosswords, the more I realise what a fusspot I can be about strict cluing (at least as I see it). Why, then, do I make an exception for Excalibur? I found this puzzle unnerving and downright unfair in parts, often struggled to see the obvious as a result, and enjoyed every minute of it!
