Emergency stand-in blogger here so I can’t remember how difficult I found this as my solved grid is at home. I do remember it didn’t seem like a Cephas puzzle, although it was in theory ‘his’ week.

Good morning from Lancing in West Sussex, where we’re staying for a few days. I started writing this last night, but had to pause when there was a huge thunderstorm – a bit loud when you’re in a caravan!
As we expect from the Don on a Friday, some obscurities and a certain amount of general knowledge needed to complete this puzzle, which was *** for me.

This took me rather longer than Kcit’s puzzles usually do though I’m not sure why.

Good morning everyone. It’s a bit steamy on the Vega Baja this morning and it’s hot in Oxford too, but not in a nice way – a bit cloudy/sunny – very grumpy weather.
Maybe it’s the weather causing us to be a bit grumpy but we both thought this was a tricky little rascal and a bit of a grind. A bit of a strange mixture of some very dodgy surfaces interspersed with a few chestnuts, some fairly easy clues and some very clever stuff. Not many anagrams either. Archy spent some time looking for a Nina round the outside but can’t spot one. We’ll be interested to hear what you made of it.

The usual great puzzle – I found this quite straightforward but still raising smiles along the way

For me this was not one of our more stimulating Wednesday Toughies (although there was a laugh, probably unintentional on the setter’s part, at 4d). There’s a theme in the puzzle based on various meanings of the answer at 26a.

A more stretching puzzle than recent Tuesday Toughies, very solidly clued with excellent surface readings, a couple of pukka &lits, and some uncommon words and meanings in both clues and solutions. Also virtually anagram-free. Very enjoyable stuff indeed – thanks Messinae.

Hurrah!! The oikball is over. Booo! The season is only a couple of weeks away. An enjoyable crossword but none too difficult. After a busy weekend We are rewarding ourselves with a visit to a seafood restaurant. Favourite clue 19ac.
