Tilsit being sadly hors de combat again, we have emerged from the desert to blog this fine Toughie from Elkamere. The perfect level of difficulty, with some splendid wordplay, some of which actually required both of us to work out what he was on about.

I seem to have spent a lot of time on this puzzle, first solving it, then giving the Hints and Tips on Saturday and finally (and unexpectedly) having to sit down and prepare the review. Thank you to Cephas for a trickier puzzle than we are used to with a much lower anagram count than usual. I seem to have had a lot more fun with it third time round!

I’d rate this a *** for difficulty and a *** for enjoyment. It would have got a lower difficulty rating if I had not got stuck in the NE corner. Quite enjoyable with some nice surfaces, so thanks to the setter – who would be the Don if I had to hazard a guess, based on the sprinkling of religious references. My favourite clues were the ones with the enjoyable surfaces. Definitions are underlined in the clues.
