Afternoon All!. Gazza is taking another break and kindly asked me if I would like to blog today – I was happy to oblige and delighted to get a fine puzzle from Petitjean. The usual trademarks are there: Food, contemporary music references, a bit of slang, some very well disguised definitions with great penny drop satisfaction plus a couple of clues where one might possibly gripe on the lack of definition by example!. I gave this 3 stars for difficulty and have highlighted my favourites in BLUE.

I was surprised in the middle of the morning to receive an email from BD about today’s puzzle. It hadn’t occurred to me that it was Thursday today and hence my Toughie day. However I soon got my brain into gear and found the puzzle to be yet another non-too-taxing Thursday offering. My only problem was with 22 across but this was caused by my carelessly writing in –ANT at the end of 3 down instead of –ICE.

I had no real problems with this one. I stalled briefly on the top half but soon got moving again.

A relatively easy solve of a puzzle that will not rank as one of Petitjean’s best.

Undeterred by the quartet of double unches I enjoyed this puzzle with its mini-theme of singers from the 1950s and 1960s. There are quite a few easy ones to give you a good start on solving the trickier clues.

A good challenge from Petitjean today which includes several bits of popular culture. This suits me because I’m much happier with popular culture than with obscure classical composers and the like that I’ve never heard of.

Once you spot the theme, this puzzle is not too difficult. There were too many convoluted clues for my liking and the usual dreadful homophone (are they mandatory these days?).

When I first read through the clues to this puzzle I thought that it was going to cause me a lot of problems, but in fact I managed to progress fairly steadily through it, helped by a couple of guesses at answers based on the definition and checking letters, which I then had to justify retrospectively from the wordplay. I have a couple of niggles but on the whole I enjoyed it.

If you can get the three long anagrams early then this puzzle is not too difficult though I had a few niggles and queries with some of the clues. Let us know what you thought in a comment and please remember to indicate your enjoyment by clicking on one of the stars below.
