As a result of implementing Cloudflare, visitors to the blog are being subjected to a 5-second delay. This is a safeguard against an ongoing DDoS attack. Each time I have changed the status from “I’m Under Attack!” the site has ground slowly to a halt, so please bear with us until the threat has finally been removed.

With regret I have had to withdraw the subscription facility. It was provided by an outside source and, as it has not been updated for over a year, is not compatible with the latest version of WordPress. It was responsible for the unavailability of the blog last Wednesday, which is the main reason it was withdrawn.
One way of being informed of new posts and/or comments is via an RSS feed – a link has been provided in the sidebar to assist with this. As this is a pull notification it is entirely under the control of the subscriber, which means both subscription and unsubscription are easily achieved. There are many ways of operating an RSS feed but my own personal preference is by using the Firefox add-on Brief.

For reasons beyond my comprehension this website has been under attack over the last few weeks – code was inserted to redirect users to advertising on three separate occasions, twice code was inserted to send out spam emails (but not to those who subscribe to the blog), and a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack was launched against it. I changed the passwords several times, and now everything seems to be back in order with the exception of warnings being issued by Google etc. – they are quick to add a site to their list and very slow at removing it.
One of the consequences of the above was that defensive software, including a firewall, was added to the site. Last night I discovered that an option in one of the new routines was causing comments from registered users, mainly bloggers, who left comments while not logged-in to be subjected to moderation. That should no longer be the case.

I’m sure that most of you are aware by now that the site has been unavailable for most of the day. Smarthosting have been very helpful and installed a firewall to fight off what one of their support staff described as “a massive inbound attack”.

Good morning, back for another weekend while the troops are partying like its 1999. The gang is up in York celebrating Elgar’s birthday so here’s hoping they have a great day.
I found this a bit of an odd puzzle with a number of answers going in and I really had no idea how they worked until I sat for a while and thought about it. I’m never sure that’s the sign of a good puzzle.
Do let us know how you felt about the puzzle. I will be at work for part of the morning keeping Ombudsman Services ticking over. I am sure the lovely Crypticsue will be popping in and keeping a watchful eye on things. I’ll see you all tomorrow!
