Putting the words to lights – crossword clues explained in plain English
Since the beginning of 2010, Wednesday’s regular setter is Jeremy Mutch who has visited the blog as Jay. During 2009, Jay set almost all the Thursday puzzles.

The heading that says 2Kiwis is not quite correct as there is only one of us today. Grandchildren minding duties in Wellington being the reason. Next week it will be no Kiwis as we will both be away in the South Island, so a surprise Mr Ron blogger to look forward to.
With only one solver, I found it hard to judge the relative difficulty but it did seem to be pretty typical for a Wednesday Jay puzzle, maybe towards the gentler end of the spectrum, and the Quickie pun was certainly gentler than last week.

Our regular morning walk takes us past a series of small ponds. Today, the behaviour of the resident ducks seems to indicate that Spring is not too far away for us. As we were recently unjustly accused of posting pictures of fornicating frogs, perhaps we should not elaborate further and just concentrate on this Jay puzzle.
The one that gave us most trouble today and pushed our solving time to the top of our three star range was 7d, and there are several others that required a bit of extra work too.

Last week we mentioned “Winter at its best”. This was very rapidly followed by a spell of “Winter at its worst”. There were severe storms all over the country, roads washed out or flooded, heavy snow across the South Island, many power outages, Whanganui river broke its banks and flooded homes and businesses. We got off comparatively lightly with just a couple of days feeling like Winnie the Pooh, entirely surrounded by water. However things are getting back to normal again now with clear blue skies and fine frosty days.
The puzzle…. Yes. Just what we expect and enjoy from Jay once again.

We awoke this morning to find our world covered in a crisp white icing of frost. The hills in the distance, to the east of us, have fresh snow and look like mountains again. Now the sun is up and shining from a clear blue sky. Winter at its best.
Jay has his gentler hat on today we thought.

Cold and windy here so we opted out of our regular walk this morning. A good day to hunker down in front of the fire to solve and blog a Jay puzzle.
A few clues with medical connections, and a few that had us beak scratching a little.

Despite the difference in seasons, it seems that the weather in UK at present is very similar to what we are having here. Thick jackets and woolly hats were needed for our regular beach walk this morning but at least we did not need umbrellas.
No significant blog birthdays today that we know of, so lets just settle back and enjoy what Jay has given us today.

Home again. Winter has arrived while we have been away. It will be warm clothing and fires in the grate for the next couple of months for us while most of you will be basking in the sunshine of a Northern hemisphere summer.
It was great to be away and do all the things we did and meet all the people we met but it still feels good to be back to a normal Wednesday with a Jay puzzle to solve, blog and enjoy.
