Thanks to Prolixic for a very enjoyable puzzle (is he becoming more restrained as he grows older?) with an excellent theme. My favourites were 15a, 24a and 3d.
Managed to finish this while hubby watched the pool with a fair smattering of help from Wikipedia and Onelook! Some of the wordplay completely eluded me, 3d and 28a in particular so some lucky guessing involved as well. Thanks to Prolixic for a good taxing Saturday puzzle and to Cryptic Sue for the wordplay explanations.
