Corrections to misprints give COIN RIMS, around which the three inscriptions in the grid can be found.

Setter’s Blog

The origin of this theme was the discovery that UK coins (the old round ones before the 12-sided one was introduced) had inscriptions around their rims. https://www.royalmint.com/discover/uk-coins/coin-design-and-specifications/one-pound-coin/

I wanted to include all four in a grid and it was clearly a good idea to have a circular inscription for solvers to find in the centre of the grid. What luck that the Scottish NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT had the correct number of letters and the two of the other three would conveniently circle a 13X13 grid (though I had to struggle to manage symmetry and finally opted to start at the top right). Sadly, I had to abandon the Northern Irish inscription, DECUS ET TUTAMEN, the grid simply didn’t leave room.

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS was a gift to solvers but I felt that some would struggle with PLEIDIOL WYF I’M GWLAD and that some sort of message was needed as a prompt. COIN RIMS was only eight letters long and easy to include as misprints with the correct letters giving a hint to the theme.

It was a pleasure to create this one. I hope solvers enjoyed it.

This one was very enjoyable to complete….as well as being interesting to research.
