Thematic pairs are animals whose names are derived from other animals of completely different species.
Ideas for themed crosswords often come to me as I solve other puzzles and ODD COUPLES is a good example of this. The answer to one particular clue was ‘spider monkey’, which got me thinking about the strange combination of two very different creatures. I soon collected a list of similar names from the animal world.
Having completed a grid with six of my favourite examples, I was pleased to discover non-animal related definitions for all the words. Swapping definitions between pairs of clues seemed an obvious device to link each word with its partner.
