A surprisingly gentle puzzle from Ray T. 17 down is easily my favourite clue, even though similar wordplay has been previously used.

The usual terrific start to Sunday morning, although it would appear that I didn’t have as much difficulty as some solvers. One clue even engaged Mr CS and I in a bit of breakfast time conversation – whatever next?!

On first reading through the clues I wondered whether we’d been given a Friday Toughie by mistake but I gradually worked my way into it and thereafter progress was steady rather than spectacular. It was the stiffest Wednesday Toughie I’ve blogged for some time, so thanks to Osmosis for the enjoyment.

I found nothing to enjoy in this puzzle – a dreadful grid with isolated corners, too many proper nouns and nary a smile.

Having got the first four letters on the top line I thought that we were going to get a Nina connected with what today is in the Church and culinary calendars, but it petered out leaving us with a pleasant but not overly-taxing puzzle. Do let us know what you made of it.

Rufus has his benign hat on today. He took us to watch the world’s most boring sport but kindly allowed us to bring along a great novel and some fine poetry. He did let himself down by not providing any food but redeemed himself by bringing beer. I have a pig.
