I presume that this one is by Jay, but I have to say that I didn’t derive as much enjoyment from it as I normally expect from his creations. It certainly seems to have a fair share of charades, together with a goodly dose of deletion-type clues – but lacks any real “Aha!” moment.

Busman’s puzzles are firmly at the easy end of the Toughie spectrum. This one has a decent grid – Busman complained on another site about my criticism (he must read the blog!) of the grid used for his previous Toughie.

I am going to blame the fact that I was sitting in the blazing sun when I started trying to solve this puzzle but , having put in a few of the straightforward solutions, I did have to go on-line and get a couple of letters to help me sort out the rest. Whilst at the trickier end of the Prolixic spectrum, it has a very nice theme (the themed clues I have spotted are marked with an *) and some great clues, so thanks to Prolixic once again for another great piece of Saturday afternoon entertainment.

The Really Good Friday!

Greetings from the Calder Valley and thanks to Big Dave for helping me out at short notice last Friday. It’s that time of the month! Elgar’s here to brighten your Good Friday and he’s produced a stunning challenge that contains lots to make you think with a big smile on your face.
Putting my nerd hat on, if there was such a thing as my favourite blocked crossword grid, this is it. I don’t think I’ve seen it in the Telegraph before, but it’s one that is often used in The Graun and was regularly used by my favourite compiler Bunthorne, who used the long answers to hide his trademark big anagrams.
We have a big anagram here today by Elgar and it’s one I haven’t seen used before in a puzzle.
