Karla makes a very welcome visit to the Friday Toughie slot – many thanks to him for the enjoyable challenge.
The right-hand side went in pretty quickly for me but the left slowed me down. I didn’t know the 9a record, the 1d plum or the 18a mammal but all were very fairly clued.

Karla has given us a really gentle Toughie today, perhaps taking into account our possibly fragile condition after yesterday’s excesses. In his first Toughie he incorporated a very subtle Nina which nobody (including the blogger) spotted. I can’t see any Nina or theme today – can you?

Karla’s name will be known to aficionados of Enigmatic Variations but this is his maiden voyage as a Toughie setter. He’s given us a puzzle with a minimum of GK but lots of intricate and clever wordplay – that’s just what I like in a Toughie and I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks to him and here’s to many more Toughies from him.
