Long standing solvers will remember with affection Mr Wednesday, Jeremy Mutch (Jay), whose weekly crosswords were a joy to solve combining elegance and wit. Before becoming the regular Wednesday setter in 2010, he boxed and coxed with Ray T on Thursdays. He also set crosswords for the Financial Times as Orense.
We have heard that Jay died recently aged 79 after a long illness. We send our condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

That is very sad news. Jay’s Wednesday puzzles were a delight to solve, starting by ‘going up the downs,’ and so consistent. Condolences to his family. RIP Jay.
What terribly sad news.
I never knew Jay but he was my favourite setter. His crosswords were a joy to solve.

Very sad news indeed. Wednesdays with Jay were always something to look forward to and enjoy. Consistently good. We have lost a master of the art. Thank you, Jay.
