  1. Welcome to Rookie Corner Ruskin. A quite challenging puzzle for me although it did raise smiles for 15a, 30a, 31a, 1d, 3d, and 13d.

The ‘&nbsp’ in 17a and 4d, in the pdf, was a little confusing and the, for me, obscure drink in 11a slowed me down and became a ‘bung in’ that needed BRB and e-verification.

There is usually a particular use of essential which is not how you have used it in 26a. It is used to indicate the central letter in a word with an odd number of letters or central two letters in a word with an even number of letters.

Thanks Ruskin and thanks in advance to Prolixic.

  2. There are lots of very clever clues in this one and it kept us working hard for quite some time. Eventually gave up and revealed to get 28d. It was all a bit more difficult than we like to see in Rookie Corner but obviously written by a very competent setter.
    Thanks Ruskin.
