Sunday Toughie 244 (Hints)

Sunday Toughie No 244

by Light

Hints and Tips by Sloop John Bee

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

Light has brought a great Toughie today, with some clever surfaces and a bit of investigoogling to check the 3d novelist and 23a cocktail. I hesitate to call it floughie as I was off base last week and there were a few crumpet scratches to get across the finish line.

I hope you find the checkers to cross the line too, but as usual I will try and give a nudge if asked.

Here we go, Folks…

As it is a Prize puzzle I can only hint at a few and hope that will give you the checkers and inspiration to go further. Gazza will return with the full review blog just after the closing date. Don’t forget to follow BD’s instructions in RED at the bottom of the hints!

Most of the terms used in these hints are explained in the Glossary and examples are available by clicking on the entry under “See also” Where the hint describes a construct as “usual” this means that more help can be found in The Usual Suspects, which gives a number of the elements commonly used in the wordplay. Another useful page is Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing, which features words with meanings that are not always immediately obvious. Don’t forget the Mine of Useful information that Big Dave and his son Richard so meticulously prepared for us.

A full review of this puzzle will be published after the closing date for submissions. Some hints follow: Remember the site rules and play nicely.

A small amount of beer, a shortened with and abbreviated tense and a senior journalist is stupid

That part of a windmill that is driven by the wind and a synonym of contained are reversed (rolls)

17a Award puts out second hip American music producer (7)

A film award puts out the second abbreviation, adds a synonym of hip or with it and a usual American

20a Provisions are disposed of at morning meeting here? (9,5)

Where you meet to dispose of your morning provisions, Terrence may dispose of gruel and orange juice (without bits). I would go for a  bacon butty, double espresso, and OJ with bits

24a Private Victor Watts has deserted (5)

Ignore the capitals. The victor of a competition is deserted by the abbreviation of watts

A musical interlude from Sting;

Although Firestarter may be a better hint

Down

2d Chattering incessantly, yellow bird south of wood (9)

Heraldic yellow and a flightless bird go beneath (south of in a down clue) a lump of wood

3d James’s work with innovative AI makes hit novel (4,6,4)

I think we must abbreviate with, or hit in the clue becomes redundant. An abbreviation of with, an anagram (innovative) of AI MAKES HIT, all followed by a synonym of novel. I reversed into the answer when I tried to think of an author with the surname James

7d Old people online civil in retirement? Not entirely (5)

The best-known member of this old race of people is probably Boudicca. A lurker (not entirely) that is reversed (in retirement) in the other two words of the clue

Unleashing Fury: Boudica, The Warrior Queen | History Hit

  1. I enjoyed today’s puzzle but it was not all plain sailing as there were 3 new words for me in 2d, 23a and 4d.

Lots of ticks on my page. Top picks for me were 14a, 10a, 17a, 12a and 19a with my favourite being 19d.

    Thanks to SJB and Light.

  2. Enjoyed that. LOI the NHO 3d having got my last checker from 14a. Biffed the answer, then parsed and confirmed it. Very clever. Otherwise a straightforward solve.

Many thanks to Light and Sloop.

  3. After the triumph of Friday I found this much more challenging. I needed help to get the one who makes you feel better in 12a. It didn’t help that I had transposed a couple of letters in 2d of course. And then 9d totally misdirected me. Otherwise a steady and very slow solve. Once I had help with 9d and 12a that gave sufficient checkers to solve the stubborn clues in the south.
It did help that I knew the novel and the historian.

If you wouldn’t mind any chance of help parsing 19a I am sure I have the right word but for the life of me cannot work out why!!

    Thanks all

  4. Not that easy, but completed.
My only unparsed answer is 19a (assuming I have the correct answer and synonym of red).

    Top three, 14a, 9d, and 19d.

Many thanks to Light and to SJB.

  5. A nice variety of clues with some smart misdirections.
Private Victor Watts at 24a was my pick, but I’ve also ticked the use of rolls in 14a, the music producer in 17a, the sneakily hidden historian in 4d and the Queen at 19d.
The incessant chattering at 2d and the book in 3d both sounded vaguely famliar and were confirmed once the wordplay was unravelled.
Very enjoyable, my thanks to Light and SJB.

  6. Not a floughie but very enjoyable – thanks to Light and SJB.
The 3d work was new to me so that needed validation. I originally wrote in a different first word for 15a (which I thought was as valid as the correct one) so that held me up a bit.
    My ticks went to 1a, 14a, 2d and 9d.

  7. For me this was a bit of a slog bought about by missing the James work when I first perused a list of his work. I was on the right track and had most of the checkers, so kicking myself for making this harder than it should have been. I hadn’t heard of the 23a tipple and needed the hint for the type of trap at 16d. In retrospect, lots of clever surfaces and a satisfying solve
    Thanks to Light and SJB

  8. Hi all, setter here.
Thank you for solving and commenting, and many thanks to SJB for the write-up and hints. (Hope you’re enjoying your 24 hours of global fame!)

    1. Many thanks to you too.
I came very close to including a YT of Al Murray, but he usually went with a full pint and a “white wine for the lady”

  9. An enjoyable Sunday puzzle, thank you Twmbarlwm. I like three of the four long ones (not so keen on the novel) but taking a drug out of Java made me smile.
Thanks to SJB for the hints.
