Hints and Tips by Sloop John Bee

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

I am still none the wiser as to who Light is from last week, but as usual the trademark™ proXimalisms “signed” this crossword better than any byline. We start with a nice Spoonerism in the acrosses and an equally fine compound anagram in the downs.

I have curtailed my hints at half of 14a and 14d clues, but as always, some tricky clues remain unhinted. I will try and give a bonus nudge or two if you ask.

Here we go, Folks…

As it is a Prize puzzle I can only hint at a few and hope that will give you the checkers and inspiration to go further. I’ll return with the full review blog just after the closing date. Don’t forget to follow BD’s instructions in RED at the bottom of the hints!

I hope I don’t have to redact any comments but I am new at this and don’t want to rock the boat. If in doubt, I’ll rub it out! I think that sentence is a bit redundant. You have all been so helpful in sorting out prior parsing failures, and I am sure I will need similar help again.

Most of the terms used in these hints are explained in the Glossary and examples are available by clicking on the entry under “See also” Where the hint describes a construct as “usual” this means that more help can be found in The Usual Suspects, which gives a number of the elements commonly used in the wordplay. Another useful page is Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing, which features words with meanings that are not always immediately obvious. Don’t forget the Mine of Useful information that Big Dave and his son Richard so meticulously prepared for us.

A full review of this puzzle will be published after the closing date for submissions. Some hints follow: Remember the site rules and play nicely.

I have been listening to this rather a lot lately, Mama Bee is one of the folks from Shields, in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and I am dreading the day she no longer remembers my name. Both these songs capture my thoughts and fears but in a hopeful manner

  1. Super and trademark-studded. Fun Spooner to kick off, as usual. 21a, 24a and 1d were particularly nifty. 17d almost had me. Very smart. Many thanks to proXimal and Sloop. Chins up, fella. I hear you.

  2. A very enjoyable ProXimal offering including his now customary compound anagram.
I think that the definition in 26a is just the first 3 words with ‘in’ being part of the wordplay.
Ticks from me for 21a, 26a, 2d and the clever 17d.

    1. I bunged term in with the rest as it seemed a bit weak of a definition for the phrase we require

  3. A couple of definitions that I thought were a bit of a stretch but, nevertheless, an enjoyable Sunday Toughie. Ticks here went to 8,21&24a plus 2d with 2d getting the gold medal for making me laugh!

Thanks to proXimal and to SJB for the hints.

  4. I found that harder than usual for Proximal. i do like the extraction anagrams.

In 14 across, is ‘originally’ an anagram indicator? Don’t see how the clue works otherwise.

    1. As a keen cyclist I would have liked to hint 14a but as a partial anagram I had run out of my allotted hints. I have originally as the anagram indicator too (an “original” way of spelling develop and the central letters of p(iec)e

  5. Indeed a Toughie, especially (for me) a few of the down clues. 1d took some getting. And I was chuffed when the penny finally dropped for 5d. For 19d I know the answer, but can’t quite work out the parsing for the last 3 letters… any gentle steer would be much appreciated!

Many thanks to proXimal and to Sloop John Bee!

  6. Only just got around to this one this evening. Found it tough going but as enjoyable as ever. At the moment 7a of all things eludes me so will pop back to it later. 26a would be my pick of the 4 excellent peripherals & particularly liked 16&24a plus 1,5,12&17d.
Thanks to proXimal & to John – sorry but can’t see what all the fuss is about Sam Fender nor the recent winner of all those Brits.

    1. Andy on the first tee struggling with a golf clue🤦
I suspect it is a bit of too much knowledge of golf as the answer is not very Golfy at all
