I feel very sorry for the poor postman who has to lug all the entries for the Prize Puzzle this week into Telegraph Towers, as it was so straightforward that the number of hopeful entrants must have gone through the roof. … Continue reading

Hola from the Vega Baja where summer seems to be continuing into the autumn. The weather must have put me in a good mood as I really enjoyed this puzzle. Parts of it are a bit off-the-wall and there are a couple of references to Stones, which may or may not be rolling, so I suspect I know who the setter is. Unusually though I count no less than eleven clues which are all or part anagram. I reckon that will keep some of you very happy.

The perfect puzzle for a very rainy Sunday afternoon – not too much time taken to solve it, and typing the review took the same time as the bubbling tomato chutney mixture did to thicken enough to be set and ready to put into jars. Perfect time management if I say so myself.
Interestingly while typing the review, I thought there were quite a lot of insertions as well as the usual hidden words but a full survey of the clue types reveals a good balance throughout. My favourite has to be 20d because of the ‘d’oh moment’ when I realised the ‘why’.

“Kia ora. Kiwis are normally shy creatures who spend most of the day asleep and come out only at night, but we have emerged, blinking into the light to bring you our very first review of a Wednesday puzzle. It has taken much beak scratching.
We have been solving and enjoying Jay’s puzzles for several years now and regard them as a consistent yardstick for Telegraph Cryptic Crosswords. Jay, we feel honoured to be blogging your puzzles.”
The above is a ‘cut and paste’ from DT 27603 that appeared here on 24th September 2014. Our very first blog!
A year on and we are still finding the process good fun, and we are certainly much less nervous about it than we were.
Enjoy today’s Jay, we did.

There's often a particular quality to Warbler's puzzles -- a kind of affability and desire to entertain that comes shining through. But this one had a strangely perfunctory feel about it. I found most of the clues dull, technically questionable, or both, and am genuinely sorry to give it my first ever one-star review.
