Anyone who prints off the pdf should take careful note of the fact that there is a theme! I didn’t and was held up for ages. Very tricky down clues didn’t help me much with the acrosses until I came back to look at the interactive version. Sorry Hieroglyph, it’s not my favourite NTSPP as it was mostly a case of writing in the themed things I knew via the checking letters and then using the wordplay to sort out the ones I didn’t know and the remaining down clues. I can quite see why our Saturday hint giver likes one particular clue!
I noted that there was a theme before printing the PDF so was in a better starting position than Crypticsue. 11a and 25a helped establish the theme early on. Although there were a number of answers I had to Google to confirm, the wordplay for the across clues was clear and I was fairly confident of the answers. Some nice down clues assisted too.
Many thanks to Hieroglyph for the crossword. I will be back later with a review.
I have to agree with CS. Once I’d solved 9a & 10a the theme became obvious. After that it was a case of looking up the various theme words in Bradford’s & Chambers Crossword Dictionary. Enjoyable nevertheless. Thanks Hieroglyph for diverting me from the work I’m supposed to be doing prior to a business trip to Russia where the temperature is just above zero!
