As with last Saturday’s puzzle, there is nothing here to trouble the moderately experienced solver. For the weekend prize crosswords I will select a few of the better clues and provide hints for them.  A full analysis of this puzzle, prepared by Peter Biddlecombe, will be available at 12.00 next Thursday,  February 19th.  Peter was Times crossword champion in 2000 and 2007 and is a pioneer in crossword blogging (see Times for the Times).

Across

1a Lent hat to cricketer (4,6)
Lent is the period leading up to Easter, when indulgence is discouraged, add a type of hat and you have a cricketer

Down

1d Ball matador must avoid! (4,4)
In cricket, this is a ball which does not  bounce before  hitting the batsman’s wicket

3d Awful bloomer, Frenchman leaving jacket (6)
Frenchman leaving indicates removal of the letter M (for Monsieur) before resolving the anagram – good timing that this clue should appear on the 25th anniversary of Torvill & Dean’s great triumph!!

22d Prompt delivery (6)
Nothing to do with cricket!! A double meaning: to instigate or to speed up childbirth
