Hi all. We have a Musaeus puzzle today, which won’t be news to those in possession of the newspaper, but might be for early online solvers.

Hello and welcome one and all. Musaeus is fairly new to the Toughie series and so far I’ve had rather mixed experiences with his puzzles. For me this was a return to the Musaeus we saw in his first appearance here: not too hard but very enjoyable.

Yes, we’ve made it to the new year, which looks rather like the old one so far, but who knows how it will pan out? I hope 2019 brings all you lovely people exactly what you desire, and comfort where that doesn’t prove possible.
Perhaps our editor has made a resolution that in 2019 Toughies should live up to their name, because for me this one certainly did. It could be that I’m just jaded after a hot date* last night. How was it for you?

Hi everyone. I hope life is treating you well. The new week of Toughies kicks off with a Musaeus puzzle, his fourth in this series. For the most part, things went along in a manner typical of a puzzle at the gentler end of (although on) the Toughie spectrum, but I had a real tussle with a few. After dithering over the ratings, I split the difference. Similarly for enjoyment: I found this inventive and a bit different and was really enjoying it, but while staring at the last answers with unhelpful checking letters, my inner grump may have voiced a few things which I won’t publish here! I’ll concede enough to Miss Grumpitty to mention that four five-letter answers had only two checked letters, and those were all vowels.
