Our news and our thoughts are focused on the people of Fiji. A few days ago they had a direct hit from a strength 5 cyclone. The most intense one ever recorded in this part of the world. It caused widespread devastation and only now, as people are able to make contact with more remote areas, is the true extent of the damage becoming apparent. Some of our family lived there for several years and we have visited a few times so we have a special feeling for the Fijians.
At home our summer continues much as we have been reporting lately with the beautiful weather still with us.
Jay in his inimitable good form once again today.

Our long hot summer continues. Some parts of the country have had rain recently, some of it in areas that were quite severely drought affected, but we have missed it all and are having a procession of days with temperatures in the high twenties. It seems that many of you are having quite the opposite and it even makes our news here at times. We occasionally almost feel sorry for you.
Jay is in fairly gentle mood again this week we thought, with the usual generous measure of good fun.

Our weather at the moment is hot, hot, hot. About 30C today which is quite exceptional for here and other parts of the country are expected to be even hotter. That’s just to make you all jealous. We’ve enjoyed looking at the photos and reading all the comments about the Birthday Bash, it sounds like a good time was had by all. Jay has given us a quicker solve than last week’s. It only just sneaked into 2* time for us.

As we are writing this, our guests to whom we said farewell a few hours ago, will be on the ferry crossing Cook Strait and threading their way through the labyrinthine passages of the Marlborough Sounds to the South Island. It has been wonderful having them with us and we are missing them already. But back to the matter in hand and today’s Jay puzzle. We thought it was quite tricky with the NE corner the last to yield and, as we found it harder than average, have given it four stars for difficulty to match the enjoyment rating.

We are now at the stage of ‘counting the number of sleeps’ until our visitors from Oxford arrive. We have prepared a list of those people who have been breaking the rules about multiple favourites to be handed to Kath for action. Our weather has been a bit of a mixed bag lately and we have our fingers crossed that it will be in kind mood for the next couple of weeks.
Another pleasant offering from Jay this week. A few tricky ones in the SW just took it into *** time for us.

Last week we were away in the ‘bush’ with family, this week we have our three eldest grandchildren staying with us, Alice 12, Ollie 14 and Freddy 15. We have sent them off to the beach with their boogie boards to enjoy the good surf that is running today while we work at putting this together.
Hope you all enjoy Jay’s puzzle as much as we did.

By the time this gets published on line we will be miles away in a tramping hut by the Orogorongo River in Rimutaka Forest Park. We will be at Turere Lodge with our two sons and four of our grandkids. (Clever people can probably Google all that.) To get there is about a two hour walk from the carpark through beautiful native bush and it is well away from any means of communication. So if we have made any mistakes that need correction, or any questions that need answering, we have to trust that another member of the blogging team will take care of them. We’ll be back to read all the comments in a couple of days. We trust you all to be on your best behaviour.
Good fun from Jay once again.

Our thoughts go out to all of you who are affected by the weather conditions that are making the news here. Meanwhile, since before Christmas, we have been having gloriously fine summer weather. Temperatures in the mid twenties and clear blue skies just at the time when the whole country is on holiday.
Jay has increased the difficulty a little from last week we thought, and is as enjoyable as ever.

Our Pohutukawa trees, that we featured at this time last year, are just starting to take on their crimson mantle once again. A reminder to us that it is time to wish Jay, plus all the other setters, Big Dave and our team of fellow bloggers, and all the hordes of commenters who make this site such a wonderful community, A Very Merry Christmas.
Jay seems to be in gentle mode today and, despite there being only one Kiwi in the blogging chair again, it all went together without too much resistance.
