The Sunday puzzle has improved significantly over the last two or three weeks.  This one was not as difficult as some of the earlier ones due,  in part, to the noticeable lack of contentious clues.

The Sunday puzzle really does seem to be changing – this one is a bit easier than those of recent weeks, but still enjoyable.

The Mine is getting still deeper – Musical Terms being the latest addition.

For the weekend prize crosswords I will select a few of the better clues and provide hints for them.  A full analysis of this puzzle will be available at 12.00 next Thursday,  March 19th.

As regular followers of my reviews are aware by now, I have not been a great fan of the Sunday crosswords.  Well, thing are looking up a bit and, for the second week running,  I actually enjoyed this one.  A few weak clues, too many double definitions, and a grid which isolated the top right and bottom left corners means that there is still room for improvement, but a definite step in the right direction. Edition 9

This edition concerns only a small, but important, minority – those brave souls who tackle the Enigmatic Variations in the Sunday Telegraph Seven supplement, or rather those who use the online version rather than the version in the supplement.

The online version of EV No. 853: Deepest Affections by Kruger is missing some key information.

There is also a small problem with the version printed in the newspaper.

The second Sunday in a row that I have enjoyed the puzzle – things are looking up.  Only one minor grumble – the top right and bottom left corners of the grid are a bit isolated from the rest.

As Spring is fast approaching, I have changed the header picture once more.  The intention is to show the same view for the current month of the year – those for January and February are still in the Gallery, along with a few new pictures.  The large van in the centre of the picture is the Mobile Library – a lifeline for Mrs BD.

Some of you may have noticed that The Mine is growing too – Popes and Antipopes are among the new additions.  Later today, following one of the clues in today’s General Knowledge puzzle, I intend to add the Hebrew / Jewish calendar.

For the weekend prize crosswords I will select a few of the better clues and provide hints for them.  A full analysis of this puzzle will be available at 12.00 next Thursday,  March 12th.

As I wrote on Sunday, this puzzle didn’t leave me feeling disappointed as previous Sunday crosswords have.   While not easy, there was satisfaction to be derived from solving some of the clues, although  rather too many of them were double definitions. And as for 23 down, I look forward to reading your views. Continue reading “ST Cryptic No 2473 – Review”

At last, a Sunday puzzle that didn’t leave me feeling disappointed.  Only one clue where I was  less than 100% sure of the wordplay, which is pretty good for me on a Sunday.

For the weekend prize crosswords I will select a few of the better clues and provide hints for them.  A full analysis of this puzzle will be available at 12.00 next Thursday,  March 5th.

Writing up the Sunday puzzles is a very frustrating job.  They tend to be difficult to finish, although this one was easier than most, but then you are left with the feeling of annoyance at some of the clues, which spoils any enjoyment you might have received from some of the others.  This one has more of the annoying clues and less of the enjoyable ones. 12.36 – Hooray! Somebody out there in Telegraphland is listening (or perhaps reading this blog!) – the problem now seems to be fixed, although I can’t go back and enter the missing answer (and Codewords 1231 has been fixed as well – see Edition 1 of this newsletter).

If you are reading this at the Telegraph – the printable grid for Friday’s Quick crossword, No 25857, still has nowhere for 1 down to be entered!!

I wasn’t going to, but I’ve decided to call these items ScrewedUp News instead of CluedUp News.

Today it’s the ST Cryptic No 2472 that has a problem. Continue reading “ScrewedUp News – Feb 22”
