Windows 10 Creators Update (late Spring / Summer 2017)

This update was phased over several weeks, so some users will have received it earlier than others.

There were a few changes / problems including the following:

Control Panel

This still exists, but Microsoft are trying to switch users to the Settings screen, which unfortunately appears to be a “work in progress”.

To recover Control Panel:

  1. type “Control Panel” into the search box (Cortana),
  2. right click on Control Panel (Desktop app),
  3. select “Pin to Start” to pin it to the Start Menu

Now the Control Panel can be accessed by clicking the Windows icon on the taskbar.

Search Index

If the search index became unusable, it can be restored as follows:

  1. open the indexing option by using one of the following methods
    • type “Indexing Options” into the search box (Cortana) > select Indexing Options  (Control Panel)
    • go to Settings > Type “Indexing Options” into the “Find a setting” box
    • go to Control Panel > System & Maintenance > Indexing Options
  2. select “Modify”
    • change locations to be indexed,
    • select “OK” when complete
  3. select “Advanced”
    • select “Rebuild”
    • reply “OK” to the message “Rebuilding the index might take a long time to complete”
    • wait “a long time”, preferably overnight.

Unable to send new emails

If you are running Windows 10 with Microsoft Outlook 2013 or 2016 Preview and sending a new email (as opposed to replying to an existing email) results in “0x800CCC13 : Cannot connect to the network. Verify your network connection or modem” or similar then try this solution:

  • open a Command Prompt as an Administrator (right click on the Start Menu to see that option)
  • type: sfc /scannow (note the space in the command)
  • about 20 minutes later sending emails should work again.
