It is rumoured that Giovanni has strong words to say about crossword blogs in the forthcoming update of his beloved manual. If he continues to produce puzzles like this one then it is not surprising that the Arsène Wenger of Crosswordland gets bad reviews.

A slow start but once I’d got started the answers went in very quickly until I was left with the final few. The double unchecked letters were a factor in the final slow-down.

I found this trickier than most Giovanni puzzles probably because there were several answers that I was not familiar with. There were also a couple of bits of wordplay that needed more thought than Giovanni wordplay usually needs.

There were one or two clues that needed a bit of thought but on the whole this was a fairly straightforward Toughie.

This is Toughie No. 1215 but there’s no mention of Magna Carta. Giovanni usually smuggles a few obscure words into his Toughies but today there’s only one (14a) that I’d never heard of. As always with this setter the wordplay is precise and the surfaces smooth.

Pretty tough today I thought with a fair bit of General Knowledge needed, but I did enjoy the challenge – thanks to Giovanni. It’s also a pangram. Talking of GK there was a contestant on yesterday’s edition of Pointless who thought that the Battle of Waterloo took place in England in the 1500s.

I had no problems until I was left with 25 down when the curse of the 4-letter answer struck. I eventually twigged but I have admit that I should have thought of the answer much sooner than I did.

Giovanni provides some religious knowledge in today’s puzzle – a minor hold-up in the north east corner was my only problem.

I found nothing to enjoy in this puzzle – a dreadful grid with isolated corners, too many proper nouns and nary a smile.

I didn’t find this particularly difficult despite the presence of several unfamiliar answers and the thought needed to work out the wordplay for the last 2 or 3 answers
