Romps with old sports stars

This is a really enjoyable puzzle from Elkamere. He’s superb at disguising definitions and there are some excellent examples here, but he’s also included several “easy” clues to give you some toeholds for the harder ones. It also seems to have two mini-themes involving a) old sports stars and b) naughty sexual activities. Let us know if you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Please take the time to record your “enjoyment factor” by clicking on one of the stars below.

This was a very entertaining puzzle which was not too difficult (although my slowness to solve 10 across did add a few minutes to my solving time). The theme was not difficult to spot. I had already solved two of the thematic answers and so had an idea what 6 down would be before I’d even looked at the clue.

The Bigger Picture!

Greetings from the Calder Valley. After expecting Firefly or Myops today, I was pleasantly surprised to see that today’s Tormentor was Elkamere. I think this is the first outing on a Friday for him and the puzzle is more than worthy of its place in the spot reserved for the hardest puzzle of the week.

This is a slightly unusual puzzle and one that I appreciate may cause a few solvers to give up. There are some lovely elegant clues, but the “gimmick” of the puzzle is clever and perhaps some may say a bit too clever. In this puzzle, there are four clues that have the indications of four and six letters each with grid slots for the four letters. The clues are all “justified” by 14 across. An explanation is shown after the Downs, although you will need to highlight it to see it. I twigged 5 across fairly quickly but couldn’t see how it fitted in to the scheme of things. Only when I completed the grid did it dawn on me how it worked. There was a Guardian setter called Apex who used to use a similar sort of device in some of his puzzles and it is nice to see this sort of working again here.

Elkamere / Anax described this as a purring pussy of a puzzle and he was right. It proves that a puzzle does not have to be difficult to be enjoyable, but I must admit to preferring Anax with teeth to Elkamere with gums!

I was pleased to get an Elkamere today and it turned out to be a proper Toughie which was most enjoyable and most challenging. I filled the left-hand side in without too much difficulty but it took me a long time to get a decent toehold in the right-hand side.

I did this puzzle in no time at all. Well, that’s according to the kitchen clock that I was using to time myself. It wasn’t until I’d finished the puzzle that I noticed that the clock had stopped and so my time was zero. Actually it felt as if it took longer than average and it certainly took me some time to get started on the southwest corner once everything else had been done. So I’ve given it 4 stars for difficulty though I suspect others will rate it as 3 stars. It was an enjoyable puzzle.

We have a new compiler today and the Telegraph are so coy about him or her that they haven’t published the name on-line this morning. So, welcome to Elkamere who’s given us a puzzle that pretty much conforms to midweek Toughie standard in terms of difficulty (I found the SW corner the trickiest) with an entertaining mixture of clues.
Let us know how you liked the new setter and please take the time to click on one of the stars below to record your enjoyment.
